Bio:
Eric Armstrong teaches voice, speech, dialects/accents, and Shakespeare
text in the MFA and BFA programs at York University in Toronto, Canada. Eric trained at Concordia University, Montreal (BFA), The Drama Studio, London UK, Stage Internazzionale di Commedia Dell'Arte , Reggio Emilio, Italy and at York University, Toronto (MFA). He studied under David Smukler both at York and at Canada's National Voice Intensive, where he was first a participant, and has gone on to be an associate, a part-time faculty member and a full-time faculty member. Mr. Armstrong did an apprenticeship with Andrew Wade of the Royal
Shakespeare Company at The Banff Centre and in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Outside of his teaching, Eric now coaches professionally. Until
Fall 2003, he worked in TV and theatre in the
Chicago area while teaching at Roosevelt University.
Eric is also very active with the Voice And Speech Trainers
Association (VASTA) for whom he was Director of Conferences 2001/2002; he is now on the board of directors and continues as Director of Technology/Internet Services. He hosted the 2001 VASTA conference at Roosevelt University and the 2002 conference for San Diego. Eric has written numerous articles for the VASTA Newsletter under the heading
TechTalk, created and maintained the VASTA website vasta.org, the
Professional Index, and the newsletter archive. He has published several articles in VASTA's Journal, the Voice and Speech Review, and participated in the Monograph on Breathing edited by Ruth Rootberg. He is also a contributor to the Complete Voice and Speech Workout Book and CD.
Eric also created his website, the voice + speech source.
His interests in this area now lie in supporting teaching with
web-based information, including sound files and Flash animation.
Eric lives in Auora, Ontario, a western suburb of Toronto, with his wife Amy and sons Ben & Noah.
