On this set of pages you will read and listen to stories about an extended family that has lived in Russian and other parts of the Soviet Union in the twentieth century.
First and foremost.... as you look at the family photographs, read texts about the family, and listen to parts of the story, what do you learn about this family? How is this family like others in Russia and in the US that have lived through the twentieth century? What is similar in their experiences? What is different? What historical events have shaped their lives? What realities of everyday life in Russia in the twentieth century come to light in these stories?
When you have become familiar with a story or reminiscence after the first or second reading, turn your attention to how the speaker talks about her family, how she tells stories about the past, what pauses and fillers does she use? What words, expressions, turns of phrase can you use from these stories to describe the story of your own family or other families you know.
Technical note: I have embedded the audio on the pages so that you can see both images and text at the same time without having to switch back and forth between windows; however, the audio files connected with these stories are rather large so the pages may be slow to load especially over a slow modem connection.
Я очень благодарен Любови Александровне Гинзбург за фотографии и интересные воспоминания и рассказы о ее семье.
