A team of MEMT 331 conductors will teach a different piece each day of this round of conducting.
Be sure to meet with your team in advance to choose a piece and who will teach what. The goal
is for the class to give a reasonable performance of your piece by the end of the class period. You will want to consider/incorporate the following: (1) Your piece must be a multicultural/ethnic piece. (2) You may well decide to choose the piece from one of the multicultural music books you can borrow from Dr. Daugherty, an elementary school or general music textbook, or a piece known to you by oral tradition. While you may choose a piece from the choral library, be aware that often these arrangments "westernize" the music. (3) Your teaching must include: (a) cultural context of the piece (not just a lecture); (b) language/diction work as appropriate; (c) instrumentation that the class can play; (d) authentic group movement, as appropriate. For some resources and ideas, consult the multicultural choral music research page. |
