The site offers a database of over 3,000 links to sites about politics and economics in the post-communist states of East Central Europe and Eurasia. In addition, the site provides information about using Cyrillic on the web and in e-mail, fonts to download, and access to research materials about elections and information policy.
You can search for links in two ways. First, you will find links to web pages that are country-specific by clicking on the country name in the drop-down menus. Russia and Ukraine also include separate pages for regional sites. General pages about Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia and the Baltics include links to sites that cover more than one country from the region. These pages also link to colleges and universities that have area studies centers. For an exhaustive list of colleges and universities all over the world, visit the Colleges and Universities Homepage.
Second, you can search for sites thematically using the search engine, developed by Jorge Ortiz in 2003. All of the links were converted to a database and associated with relevant keywords. The search tool generates output by matching words in the title, abstract and embedded keyword list. You may type a general search term (such as "election") or a specific term (such as "Kuchma") and press enter. The search engine will generate a page of links that matches the words in your query. The search can be refined by selecting a country from the drop down menu located next to the text box.
The new version of the site offers additional enhancements: improved graphics, an ADA-compliant text-only version, site submission form and additional content. We will continue to add more features to the site, so come back often!
