Poland Five - Text

Male, born in Warsaw.  60 years of age.  Trained as an actor in Poland and has lived in Australia since 1980.   Speech substitutions are quite inconsistent and there does not seem to be much of an influence from the Australian accent.

Distinctive features:

  • ER as in first, morning and her, realised with some retroflex in those words but in the words porridge and stroking, realised more with a trill.
  • Goose vowel and its shorter equivalent as in foot, lengthened.
  • TH becomes D and T and similarly T becomes TH as in told
  • EI as in able, realised as AEble, again substituted for a short front vowel sound.
  • G becomes K

Recorded by Geraldine Cook, July 5, 2006; edited by Paul Meier July 28, 2006. Running time 04:11.

My story...I am the cleaner, every morning I'm cleaning office, every night I clean for my wife, preparing dinner, and waiting for my big day...you are my big day..we love you, we want you, they told me long time ago, now, nobody wants me, nobody will have me, and I am very lonely, that's me, lonely goose.
