TRANSCRIPTION OF UNSCRIPTED SPEECH

Yeah…I was born in Ukrainian. (laughs) I’m twenty-nine years old…um. I studied in the Kiev Military Lyceum. Kiev Military Lyceum, in Ukrainian. I have parents. My father and mother. I have a sister. um. Now I have my children. One. Baby. He two years ago, she, two, two years ago. She named Mary. I’m an actor and…I’m happy that I, I am to do in my life, but sometimes I’m not very happy because, uh, people who lives in my country not understand wha, what they doing in this life, but I’m, uh…but I know that one days maybe in future, me, my peoples, people who lives in the world, understand what they doing in this world.

The subject’s speech is initially halting and, perhaps, influenced by the spelling of the text while reading. Some attributes of his speech include: substitution of: w for v (“vet”), s for z (“disease”), z for voiced th (“that they”), and short I for long e (“feel”). The tongue is curled and slightly retroflexed on r sounds (“cure”) and h sounds include extra breath with slight glottal contact (“Harrison”). The subject uses minor key inflection for emphasis and a relaxed facial position effects bilabial sounds (“baby”). The intrusive k is heard after words ending in “ing” (“doing in this life”).
