Wisconsin Two - Text

Subject is female, sixteen years old, born Appleton Wisconsin. Raised in DePere, WI. Had also lived in Saukville and Madison. Cynthia Blaise recorded this subject on 8/05/99. Subject has almost half-close front vowel for 'pot' and 'gods'; you will hear 'white light' using a centralized starting point for the diphthong; she uses the open front vowel for 'walk'. Good generational contrast with Wisconsin1. This subject also exhibits the creaky voice that had become almost universal in white females of her age by the mid-90's. Much glottalization of final consonants, marking the staccato style of this age group of speakers. Some machinery hum on this recording edited by Paul Meier on 9/26/99. 2:40secs.

(Um) My parents decided to throw me a surprise birthday party for my sixteenth birthday, and I was really surprised.  Like, I got pictures back and my face-- I was just like so surprised.  My mom-- I… was shaking when I walked in the door, and my friends-- three of my friends took me shopping, and (um) then when we came back, everyone was just sitting on the stairs. And one of my friends jumped out of the closet.  It was fun.  It was-- it was really nice of them to do that.
