Peru Three - Text
The subject is a 25-year-old student currently living in Santa Ana, California. He is a graduate level art student and has been in the United States for 12 years. He moved here with his family when he was thirteen from Lima, Peru. The subject came directly to Southern California from Peru and hasn't lived anywhere else since then. He learned English from the California public school system when his family moved here.
In the recording you'll hear the subject talk about the neighborhood he came from and why his family left. He discusses what he does as an art student and what kind of subject he likes to paint or draw including creatures, landscapes and anything that represents a parallel universe. He describes some similarities and differences that he has observed about Lima and Southern California. He also talks about some memories he has of Lima- he describes street vendors and all the people and smells he experienced.
The listener will hear an even rhythm, with clipped, staccato words. The tone of voice is low and inflection tends to go down at the end of phrases. The subject speaks slowly and deliberately; a lot of attention is given to each word he says. The subject has been in the States a long time so his grammar and sentence structure are consistent with American English.
