2011 World Human Geography Conference: Communities and Ethics
September 15 and 16, 2011, Lawrence, Kansas
Hosted by the American Geographical Society, Haskell Indian Nations University,
and The University of Kansas. Sponsored by the U.S. Army Research Office
Concept and Intent
The inaugural World Human Geography Conference (WHGC) aims for a small gathering of recognized experts. It focuses on specific themes of importance to society and the discipline of geography. Participants are invited from all disciplines and communities concerned with peoples and places around the globe. All attendees are encouraged to participate in discussions. The two themes of the 2011 WHG Conference are:
Theme One: field-based knowledge about foreign people and places.
Geographers, anthropologists, and other regional experts will highlight what they have learned from years of field research enhanced by language skills, scholarship, and geographic information systems (GIS).
Theme Two: communities and ethics.
Speakers from a variety of communities – public, private, tribal, academic, and government institutions from local to global – will discuss community-based research methodologies; the ethics of funding sources; and the nature and accessibility of open-source research in the digital age, with a focus on how these themes impact indigenous peoples.
The conference will provide a forum for sharing research findings related to these critical concerns impacting peoples and places worldwide. Drawing on traditions and customs that inform indigenous discourse and learning at Haskell Indian Nations University, we will encourage an honest, open, and respectful discussion that is too often absent in public life today.
Please see the Lodging page for a last minute update on transportation from the Oread to Haskell campus.
