mobile med

Welcome to mobile med.  My name is Zachary Stoltenberg and I am a graduate student of architecture at the University of Kansas. I set up this website to both serve as a base for my graduate design project and to serve as a chronicle of my progression with this project over the next nine months. My design project is to design a mobile medical center for disaster relief and terrorist attacks.  Click here for a detailed project description. After the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, the United States Government established ER1.  The directive of ER1 is to design a new working prototype hospital of the future that is more capable of handling terrorist, biological, and chemical attacks as well as natural disasters.   My goal is to expand on this design prototype and result in a fully self contained hospital system that can either be added to existing hospitals during surges or function independently during times of disaster. The hospital itself will be comprised of many different modules based on the ISO standards that govern shipping worldwide, thereby making them compatible with current modes of transportation and making the entire operation as mobile as possible. Challenges outlined in this project are maximizing workable space of each container, systems management, protection from biological and chemical attacks or disasters, cost, and making the design compatible with both new and existing technology. I will continue to update my progress throughout this experience and look forward to the publication of my project at its end. Please check back!
