About Us

The 50th Anniversary Brown v. Board of Education Web site is a class project created by 17 students enrolled in the Fall 2003 Journalism 527: Online Journalism class. The class, taught by Professor Ann M. Brill, PhD and Graduate Teaching Assistant Staci Wolfe, is a journalism elective offered by the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas.
.
The Web site was built with the purpose of giving students more information about the Brown v. Board of Education case and the people who were involved. This history changing case took place in Topeka, Kan., just 30 miles away from KU’s campus. With such a close proximity, it is only fitting that KU’s Online Journalism class take an active role in the anniversary by creating an online resource for Internet users.

The class was divided into two teams: one to manage content and one to oversee design. Team members were responsible for either research and writing content or the architecture and design of the Web site. In addition, students wrote individual stories about key figures who are featured in the profiles section of the Web site.
