What if Brown didn’t happen until 1980?

University of Kansas professor Bill Tuttle said that it would be unlikely that it would take this long to reach a decision like Brown v. Board of Education.

“World War II was a turning point, an idealistic crusade against racism,” Tuttle said.

Delaying civil rights at home for much longer after battling the Nazis, would not have been feasible.

Had the case not been ruled on until 1980, the United States likely would have seen more violence – race riots, more vehement protests and further demonstrations as tensions built.

The ‘80s saw the rise of political figures like Jesse Jackson, who likely would not have been a position to make a national impact had the Brown ruling not come years earlier.

Again, though, the momentum for civil rights likely would not have stopped. Protests would have continued and, ever so slowly, the fight for civil rights would have continued.
