KU Lawrence campus

This site is dedicated to the technical communication program at the University of Kansas. KUTC is part of the English Department, and all of our courses earn students credit in English and writing at both the Lawrence campus and Edwards campus. If you are interested in developing your technical-communication skills for current or future employment in the fields of science, high-technology, or business - especially if you wish to become a technical writer or editor - this is the program for you.

We currently offer a full technical-communication program equivalent to a minor or certification (official KUTC Certificate coming soon). See the navigation at the top of each page to access information about those courses and to meet our program instructors and graduates. All courses are currently offered as live courses, but we plan to begin offering them as online courses, as well, to better address the needs of working and remote students.

The following are the courses required to complete the full program:

362: Foundations of Technical Writing

English 362 is the course that lays the foundation for the advanced courses in the program. This course or a completed undergraduate degree is the prerequisite for enrolling in the Advanced courses. English 362 is a required course for many KU schools and departments and fulfills the 300-level English requirement for most programs.

News: English 362 will be offered as a customizable, modular course beginning Spring 2010. If your University of Kansas program is interested in having a custom section dedicated to your students' needs, please contact Chris McKitterick (cmckit@ku.edu) to set up a meeting to discuss this option.

562: Advanced Technical Writing

Students may enroll in English 562 after successfully completing English 362. This course expands upon what you learned in English 362 and provides a realistic documentation experience. This course fulfills the 300+ English requirement for most programs.

564: Advanced Technical Editing

Students may enroll in English 564 after successfully completing English 362. This course fulfills the 300+ English requirement for most programs. In this course, students work with other writers in the program, while mastering editing tools and practicing how to identify and correct common writing problems. This course fulfills the 300+ English requirement for most programs.

563: Advanced Technical Writing/Editing II

Students may enroll in English 563 after successfully completing either English 562 (to take this as a writing course) or English 564 (to take this as an editing course). This course simulates an internship or on-the-job training, especially for students who cannot be matched with an internship opportunity or are not interested in such. This course fulfills the 300+ English requirement for most programs. To complete the KUTC program, students need to either take English 563 or English 596 as the final course; most students opt for English 563.

596: Technical Communication Internship

English 596 is the course for students who are earning KU credit while working on real-world technical-communication projects. This course fulfills the 300+ English requirement for many programs. To complete the KUTC program, students need to either take English 563 or English 596 as the final course.
