Lemuel Shaw (1781-1861), Melville's father-in-law, his financial
supporter, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts.
He wrote some decisions admitted by all commentators to be very
important -- whatever their opinion of his concepts of law and
justice.
